Saving Animals During Disasters is so excited to announce the fourth annual SALTY PAWS FESTIVAL to take place around the beautiful Carolina Beach Lake on October 20th. ALL proceeds go to help in the care and medical needs of so many neglected and abused animals.

The SALTY PAWS FESTIVAL is hosted by Saving Animals During Disasters, a 501c3 non-profit organization whose goal is to aid in the rescue and support of disaster affected animals. As we have learned, disasters can be natural as well as man made!

The first three Salty Paws Festivals, which were held in October of 2009, 2010 and 2011 around the lake, were HUGE successes, drawing crowds of approximately 3000 people, 75 vendors and more pets than we could count! We’re expecting an even larger turnout this year. The festival will have music, food, pet contests, pet adoptions, and lots of activities for adults, children and pets.

Many vendors have already expressed interest in participating. All applications will be treated on a first come first served basis, so I encourage you to respond as soon as you can if you want a space. There are plenty of electrical outlets around the lake, but spaces with water are very limited. We hope you and your family will join us for a fun-filled fall day around our beautiful lake. (This lake is the closest freshwater lake to the ocean on the east coast, and the ocean is across the street!) Don’t forget to bring your pets too. See you there!! Sincerely,

Our 2nd Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday will be held at Harbor Masters Restaurant and Bar near the public marina in Carolina Beach on February 12, 2013. Our first Fat Tuesday was festive, colorful and fun, fun, fun. Please join us for a rollicking good time! Tickets sold out in 10 days last year, so please check back for details in January.

Spay/Neuter Billboards

During spring of 2012 we placed 11 billboards throughout eastern North Carolina promoting spaying and neutering and informing the public that more than 260,000 animals were euthanized in public shelters in our state alone in 2011.

What is a puppy mill?

A puppy mill is a commercial dog breeding facility that is operated with profit as the central motivation and little to no concern for animal welfare.

The dogs in puppy mills are often underfed, have matted, filthy hair, rotting teeth and painful ulcers. The dogs are typically de-barked by kennel owners who jam a metal rod down the dog’s throat to rupture its vocal cords. This “practice” results in broken jaws that are never treated.

Female dogs are usually bred as soon as they come into heat and are bred every heat cycle. They are bred until they can no longer produce, and then are killed.

How can you help?

First, don’t buy your pets from pet stores. Approximately 98% of their puppies are bred in puppy mills. Adopt shelter animals when possible and if buying a puppy always research where your puppy is coming from.

If you spot a puppy mill, take notes of your general observations and report to local authorities, local humane societies and health departments. All it takes is your complaint.

Saving Animals During Disasters offers the following services to help rescue efforts and to provide for abused, neglected and homeless animals. All of these services could not be achieved without invaluable volunteer support and donations.

• Disaster Trailer – Run Disaster Transport Network -
Through your generosity we have created a state of the art mobile care unit which enables animal advocates to provide the very best care in disaster situations. Our trailer transports vital supplies (such as medicine, bedding and food) to safe-centers set up for animal rescue.

• Children’s Education Program -
We visit schools to talk about animal care and safety.

• Spay / Neuter Clinic -
We operate a spay/neuter clinic for cats in our local area.

• Community Awareness Billboard -
We use this billboard to help make the community aware of important issues.

• Thrift Store -

Saving Animals During Disasters is planning to open a thrift store in late fall or early spring of 2013. Donated items are always welcome, as long as they are in saleable condition. We can’t accept adult clothing, exercise equipment or computers. All donations are tax deductible and can be dropped off at the following locations:

We at Saving Animals During Disasters are working with the Humane Society of the United States, as well as other groups in disaster animal rescue and especially with Dare County. We need cash donations most and anyone can donate using Paypal. Please pray for the protection of so many homeless and neglected animals in these areas.

Pet Disaster Kit

If you are facing a major weather event or an evacuation, a pet disaster kit should include the following:

1. A three-day supply of food and drinking water, as well as bowls, cat litter and a container to be used as a litter box.

2. Current photos and descriptions of pets.

3. Up-to-date identification, including an additional tag with the phone number of someone out of the area in the event the pet becomes lost. (It is best to have your pets microchipped if at all possible.)

4. Medications, medical records and a first aid kit stored in a waterproof container.

5. Sturdy leashes, harnesses and carriers to transport pets safely as well as blankets or towels for bedding and warmth. Carriers should be large enough to comfortably house your pet for several hours or even days.
